Death of Cassandra

In this red figure vase painting, Cassandra flees to the altar of Athena for protection during the fall of Troy, but to no avail. Ajax (the Lesser) pulls her from the sanctuary and rapes her. She goes on to Greece with Agamemnon where she is promptly killed by Clytemnestra.

Clytemnestra (wielding the axe) kills Cassandra on the inside of this drinking cup. To the left of Clytemnestra is Apollo’s tripod, and to the right of Cassandra is his altar with a laurel tree. Cassandra was a priestess of Apollo at Troy.
